deusXango wrote:With Brandon Knight's evolving PG game, Greg Monroe remains the best offensive facilitator on the team. If this is to be an uptempo, fast-break team, wouldn't it make sense to have Scott Machado on board? He was recognized as the best fast break, open floor decision maker in college ball last year.

The comparisons made with Aaron Afflalo could be to the detriment of Kim English sticking with the team. Flaws were always found with Afflalo's game (by the local media), and as soon as it became apparent that he was probably a better fit with the team than Stuckey, BAM!, he was gone. Middleton will make the team because he's got the good sense to keep his head down, and stumble around.

Kyle Singler has shown well, but why the extended minutes in summer league? Matter of fact, we're starting two SF's and playing them for extended minutes, and ignoring our need for rebounding PF's. Macklin was here last year, worked out at the Palace from the end of the season to the beginning of summer league, and still he sits; playing behind a 4th year pro in summer league has got to suck. Don't make Mr. Gates mad.

Opening night, if Monroe starts at center, something's wrong. If Ben starts, something's really wrong! Center by commitee; Kravstov and Drummond (maybe Wallace should they foul out), should get a chance to play through their mistakes. Maggette should get his minutes behind Prince, and Jerebko should get his behind Monroe. Maxiell should be traded by opening night, if for nothing more than his uncalled for LeBron like, "will he stay or will he go?" diva like drama. Since none of our guards are facilitators, for real, our 3 guard rotation should be Knight, Stuckey, and English. Any problems with that? Oops, that's a nine man rotation already; sorry fellas.

A 9 man rotation is all that's needed, and I certainly a fan of only rotating 3 guards. Similiar to how Joe, Zeke and Vinny were used. I also can see Knight, Stuckey and English on the floor at the same time as well.

FORUM Empty daye has another nice game...

Post  frankied Thu Jul 12, 2012 1:53 pm

this fan hopes that the team doesn't trade him, but figures out a way to use his obvious talents.
i've always thought that all he needed was to be put on the floor and left alone.
do with daye what they did with knight. just put him out there, let him play through his mistakes and bad games and at the end of the year, i think you'd have a guy who gave you 15 points, 6-7 boards and a couple assists a game, either from the SG or SF spot.
and if the team won't use him, i just hope they trade him so he gets his shot some place else.

You know, if Daye could beat out CV and/or Maxiell for the reserve PF spot, I wouldn't mind seeing him stick with the team.

It's always been my contention that Daye is a natural PF, it's just that at 210 lbs, he tends to get pushed around in the paint. At least he did 2 years ago when John Kuester tried to start him at power forward, for a few games. Kuester

Daye seems to be a decent rebounder and shot blocker. Maybe with a few years of experience under his belt, Daye could come off the bench and play a resonably effective stretch 4, for the Pistons next season.

It's just that we already have 5 SFs, and I thought trying to play SG last year really messed with Daye's head, so maybe PF is his best position...even with his skinny frame.

Back with a vengence, the Pistons trash the previously undefeated Celtics, and Drummond holds Fab Melo to ZERO points!!!

Middleton comes to life, and Daye has another stellar game(5 blocked shots? WOW!)!

Knight, 19pts and 14 assists??? Zeke would be proud!

This was one of those victories you'd like to frame, or CAN, so you can open it up on somebody in the future!

AGAIN GOING INTO HIS 4TH SEASON AND HE'S IN SUMMER LEAGUE BARELY BEATING UP ON ROOKIES AND 1ST YEAR GUYS. REALLY HOW CAN YOU BE THAT IMPRESS?

If he does this in preseason maybe I'll hop on this Daye Bangwagon, but not now.

I agree with you who believe Daye's best position is power forward. He just cannot guard any other position. I noticed that during the recent games, he often had he often got turned around with his back facing the offensive player on the other team and had no idea where the basketball was located. However, in this last game when playing the 4, Daye started to get things right being in position and boxing out with some nice blocks. Daye has gained some weight but still does not show any signs that he has been working out like Knight in the weight room. I would prefer Daye to take any minutes that might be allocated to Charlie V. Daye might be a better shooter from long range and given another season to grow, might show Piston fans that he is a keeper.

FORUM Empty We cannot know much after watching the summer league games

Post  cool breeze Thu Jul 12, 2012 9:42 pm

Watching those games did not make me feel confident about Drummond's ability to be able to last more than three minutes on the hardcourt once the season starts. He was out of position on defense because he had trouble running the floor much of the time. He was watching opposing players get offensive rebounds because he was so winded. Drummond is only 18 years old and doesn't have a clue how fast the real NBA game is played. Many fans cannot grasp how fast this game is played by the real NBA studs. I am always amazed at how fast those players move from free throw line to free throw line. I really didn't see any big man who was in supreme game shape and who could sprint back on defense and be ready to take a charge or stop dribble penetration. Charlie V would not have looked real bad in these games. What I see in Drummond is that he is far superior to Darko. I really believe he is capable of being a real stud if he wants to put in the work. He has no idea how much work that will take. But for the life of me, I cannot accept the idea that the Pistons need Ben Wallace to hold his hand this coming season. Why not make Wallace a coach if that is why he will be with the Pistons and then sign a guy like Macklin or another big man with promise who is not under contract? We see this kind of stuff all the time with the Pistons. Friendships are more important than what might be best for the team. If Drummond has any sense he must know that this is a great opportunity. He can become a huge story and this pick might be one of the best things Dumars has done in the end. What a body!!

Brandon Knight will lead this team to glory just like Isiah Thomas did many years ago. How many players would have done what Knight did this summer. He has worked his butt off and everyone can see the results with the changes in his body. Knight has all the right stuff of a leader. He played in those games without hesitation where many other players who were as successful as he was would not think of risking their reputations playing with a group of rookies who have not spent any time with each other. I suspect that Knight will really show how good he is in his 3rd season. This coming year, he will be trying to up his game and that is always a tough thing to do. He will be concentration on improving his leadership ability and his defense. Knight has a plan for success and all of us Piston fans are so lucky that he is such a smart and dedicated man. And he is one of the good guys in life. I have seldom been so excited about a young Piston player. Go Brandon!

Kyle Singler has signed his contract with the Pistons and I couldn't be happier. He hasn't been included in some bogus trade before we see what he brings to the team this fall. He has filled out without losing his quickness. Singler is another extremely smart clutch player. He didn't try to do too much and was really tired when he arrived to play in those summer league games. But he did come to show he wants to be part of something special that is coming to all Piston fans now that Dumars has this team going in the right direction. What I did like while watching Singler in the summer games was his weak side defense which seems to befudel so many young players like Daye. He knew what do to in every situation. Don't forget that Singler is a savy offensive player who is a great passer. I am hoping that somehow Dumars can trade one of the vet small forwards before training camp. This guy needs to play along with Knight, Monroe, Drummond, Stuckey and the Russian God who will be walking across Siberia and into Alaska making his way to the Palace.

English looks a lot like Joe Dumars to me. He is a keeper and another smart guy. Suddenly, this Piston team has gone from being a group of retarded knuckleheads to mentally tough studs. If Detroit plays the young guys and becomes a lotery team again, it would be fine with me. Then we get to select another piece of the future NBA championship team.

How can Dumars rid the team of Maxiell, Charlie V, and Bynum before training camp? That is what needs to happen along with moving one of the vet small forwards. Bring in another rookie point guard to try out for the team. If the Piston organization keeps the vets, then we won't see much of the rookies with the possible exception of Drummond because that will mean that Dumars is feeling pressure to make the playoffs. I am starting to feel much better about the effort that Dumars is making to improve this team. I will just have to trust his judgment now.

Just saw some high school video probably when he was a senior of Anthony Davis and I swear he was the same size, then, as Daye is now.

Joe has got to find somebody, who will take this dude off of OUR hands.

He is just too skinny, skeleton-like, not like Kevin Durant, Reggie Miller, or Mikkie Moore. He still has an enclave chest, with biceps the same size as his forearms and thighs the same size as his calves.

Joe has to flip Daye into a pick or another player.

WE need to get the small market, Grizzlies executives on the phone and offer Maggette's expiring contract and Tay for Rudy Gay.

That's right offer the Grizzlies the opportunity to rid themselves of Rudy Gay's contract. The Grizzlies could get a $10 million expiring contract (Maggette) and a functioning, veteran SF with a cap-friendly salary (Tay).

WE would get Gay's contract, a "real" small forward entering his prime, and a guy who can run with OUR young nucleus of Knight, Moose, Stuckey, Drummond, Jerebko, and English. (I'm not a fan of the Singler signing, but I guess as long as he is OUR 11th man WE may be spared having to watching him drenching on the floor.)

For all of you fans, who are saying Rudy's contract is too large, don't give me that talk. Somebody has to get paid and WE can handle his contract. Remember, WE still Charlie V., amnesty candidate (sooner) or an expiring contract (later). Next season is also the final year for Maxey ($5 million) and Bynum ($3.25 million), and Daye ($2.96), and there is always the veteran mid-level.

Do it Joe, a Tay and Magette for Rudy trade works -
[Only admins are allowed to see this link].

Also, WE should sign Terrance Williams with the $1,337,931 trade exception gain from the Ben Gordon trade to the Bobcats.

Don, for someone that can't know much after watching SL Games, you draw a lot of conclusions, LOL!

Look, watching these games are not designed for you to feel confident, it's for the youngster(and old farts like Daye) to gain experience and confidence as they prepare for preseason.

If we see things that build our confidence in certain players, then that's icing on the cake.

However, unlike you, I've seen and found out a lot watching these games.

I finally got to see Singler do his thing, and he made me a believer in his future in the NBA, and I was more than a little skeptical before.

I also needed to see English, since I only had heard what he could do, and that was a very plesant surprise.

And while you didn't get any confidence around Drummond, I got a lot of confidence that this kid has a great future in the NBA. He has all the tools, and even though they're very raw, even now, he's ready to play a limited(20+ MPG) role initially on this team.

BTW, outside of that, your post was a really good one, and I totally agree about Knight! Joe has really done well lately, and despite the fact that I couldn't see how the turmoil around the team could affect him so much. It appears that having a solid and secure ownership has truly unleashed him to return to being himself.

Finally, the future looks bright!

Now we either get some solid FA's and compete hard, or we develop the core of this team and compete for the 8th spot or go back into the lottery, I can live with either, because it's just a matter of time now.

As Arnold said... I'll be Back!!!

Sebastian you crack me up when you get in this spells about a player we need to pick up. Rudy Gay simply doesn't fit as a needed player and this isn't to say Rudy isn't talented because he is but he is not the A Typical players required for this young group of players.

Also no matter how you squeeze in his 16 Million a year salary the Pistons eventually have will to pay Monroe, Knight and who knows whom else. Gay contract is for another 4 years and during that time Monroe and Knight will be up for new contracts as well Stuckey I believe. The money won't be there

I haven't read anywhere that the Grizzlies are trying to rid themselves of Rudy Gay are you even ceratin that Gay is on the blocks to be traded?

Come on Don what rookie has any idea about anything at the NBA level? These rookies are all in the beginning learning stages of what the NBA will offer as for as play calling and concepts. You're sounding as if Drummond or any other rookies should already know all these things coming in after 1 year of college ball. Summer League is to prepare him for presesson and preseason is to prepare him for regular season, so it far too early to say what will happen when regular season starts. By that time hopefully he figured a lot of this stuff out and being winded well he just played 4 games in a row which is a rarity in the NBA. I'm sure all the rookies in the league is a little tired about right now.

FORUM Empty HERE YA' GO KIDDIES, EAT IT UP

Post  deusXango Fri Jul 13, 2012 9:17 am

We're putting too many expectations on a franchise that was dead in the water a year ago, and had been for years; everything is getting better, from top to bottom. I laughed at Tom Gores half time extravaganzas (old school throwbacks), and felt his spending should have been more on the team than on lockerrooms, and other structural changes; as an owner he's taken an old mans dream and is reorganizing it into his own vision of what a 21st century Palace should be. This in the first year. He's putting his money where his mouth is. I like Mr. Gores.

Joe Dumars has crawled up out of his box (licking powdered sugar, and jelly from his fingers), and began making some of the the most astute executive moves a focused, and driven GM could make for his team to not keep pace, but set the pace for NBA teams that are rebuilding. He's steered clear of the media hype players; damn the "big 3" where three players suck up all the CAP space, regardless of their fit, because of their name recognition, and fill the roster out with old spare parts looking/hoping for a championship. Joe's building a team that won't have to be rebuilt in 10 years, but reloaded over the years to remain in contention. High character guys on the team means, no divas. We can see enough difference in the team to get excited, and the summer ain't over. You go Joe!

We've talked about Brandon Knights' smarts, but how did Andre Drummond get from high school, to completing his first year of college, and end up on a professional basketball team, all before his 19th birthday? Smoke and mirrors? The young man is extremely intelligent, and no matter how "raw" he is, that quick, sponge like mind will allow him to develop to a high level, in a fantasticly short amount of time. He'll be given what he needs to succeed by the franchise, and we, the fans, will have something we've not had to cheer for; a legitimate world class, healthy big man who'll be the star of stars. After all we've been through, we can't show a little patience?

Our PG situation has been solved. When was the last time we witnessed an exhibition, on any level of play, like the one Knight put on yesterday? 19 pts. and 14 assists! That was clearly not something he learned from Rodney Stuckey. It seems that not only has he spent considerable time in the weight room, but he's been watching a lot of Pistons archive film. That's what a smart young man does; he works on his conditioning, and studies the game. I don't know of any veteran backups available that are as phycally gifted, driven toward success, and smart as Knight. He doesn't need a verteran backup to mentor him, the team needs a young talented backup to constantly keep him challenged.

All in all, there are so many things going on with this team that I find encouraging, I won't go into them all, so I've just addressed leadership; all but coaching, which remains to be seen. Stay tuned ladies and gentlemen, more will be reveiled.

I'm shocked at the skill level of some of these 2012 draft picks.

A.Drummonds looks like Amare Stoudemire. Big, physical and really good hands! WOW! I'm surprised.

English looks like an Afflalo clone. Maybe A tad bit more aggressive but that's exactly who he looks like to me.

Middleton game is very smooth. I can't compare him to anybody but I do see the skill level and talent in his game. Might not be any room for him on this team but Joe might have to dump A few players and make room.

Austin Daye. I know you can score the ball Austin. So your 18 pt AVG is not impressive to me. I have to see defense, rebounding, diving on the floor, block shots..stuff like that then I will be impressed.

Another player I like is the big boy from Cincinnati Yancy Gates. This kid is huge and he has some skills. The Pistons need A big boy like this, even if he has D.N.P. so what.

Great analysis PhillipBoy, sharp eye for talent. It's going to be very interesting to see what Joe does with his over-abundance of SF's. I personally prefer the young lions over the grizzled vets. Singler, Middleton, and Tay is who I'd go to war with.

I like Gates over Maxiell, and Daye over Villanueva; not only do they offer the team more, they're sooo much cheaper. I love my brother from Loundes county, but it's time for him to ride into the sunset; job well done Big Ben, there was none better during your day (not even the great Shaq O'Neil). Come on Joe, keep Macklin around, he's worked for it.

Wisefan I do not know what I have said that made you this excited and angry with me. I am only providing my observations of what I saw on the floor. I think Drummond has the potential to be great and the Pistons are really lucky that he slipped down so far in the draft. It is fantastic that we have Drummond. But he has a long way to go in the way of learning what it takes to be a consistant effective player. He will find out soon enough. Did you read the comments Knight said about Drummond? This is good. Knight is on Drummond pressuring him to concentrate better. This will come when Drummond gets in better physical condition and becomes stronger. I believe he can be a really good defender and rebounder if he is willing to play that role for the team within the next two or three years. Yet, after this last game against Philly, the announcers interviewed Drummond and mentioned that the coaching staff on the Pistons are projecting him as a starter. That would be great but so much pressure for an 18 year old kid who didn't really have a good college year last season. He likes to be coached and he wants to play with Monroe. I just don't want him to crash and burn losing what confidence he might have by fans placing too much pressure on him. How many 18 year old big men have been able to adjust to the NBA game? Will Drummond be the exception? How about everyone be patient and being willing to wait until he is at least 21 years old before he is declared the second coming of Christ? Right now the player who impressed me the most is English in this draft class. And this second round pick from last season, Kyle Singler, will show all those Duke haters that perhaps a Duke guy wearing a Piston uniform is not so bad after all. I sure wish that Battier could have been a Piston. I say that knowing how much I hated the fact that Battier's Duke team beat Arizona in the NCAA finals.

FORUM Empty Joe Dumars

Post  cool breeze Fri Jul 13, 2012 5:29 pm

I have been watching Joe Dumars while the Pistons were playing in the summer league games. Most of the time the camera caught Joe sitting down and usually using his phone. There is a lot of pressure that goes with his job for sure and I have been one who has placed a lot of blame on his shoulders for the Pistons skid. He seems to be doing a great job now and has been a really smart and effective GM concerning the draft for three straight seasons. Now I am worried about his health. During the Philly game, Joe was standing and showing off his massive body. I couldn't believe it and had to replay what I saw. How could this have happened to a guy like Joe Dumars who was in such outstanding physical condition during his prime years in the NBA? He has the look of someone with a kidney disorder. Now I feel bad ever mentioning anything about his weight. I think he really has a serious medical condition that has nothing to do with eating too many donuts. Let's all pull for Joe to get his health back and lose the excess weight and get his health back. Dumars is now in the classification of someone who is dangerously over weight. For someone who has been a athlete weighing about half of what he is weighing now for most of his adult life, the danger of something horrible happening is now magnified greatly.

Summer League - WOW, English blew off the doors today, this kid is a keeper. Daye also had yet another great game, 10 pts, 11 boards! I'm now coming around to what DX said, I'd rather have Daye than CV, unless CV has radically changed or something. At least Daye rebounds!!! Middleton also has his 2nd straight good game(8pts, 4 boards). Drummond didn't do a lot, but he only played limited minutes.

On the wire - Scola has been released, but the bidding may be too rich for our blood - [Only admins are allowed to see this link]

As they're working through the X's & O's, there is a theory that states that the longer a whiteboard has been up, the probability of someone drawing a wiener on it approaches 100%!

FORUM Empty Drummond is our starter .,.not in January .. NOW?!!

Post  Grizz Fri Jul 13, 2012 10:01 pm

Viewed the NBA.com interview of Drummond after the 76er game. It must have been announced somewhere but announcers flat out said Drummond is the Piston starter .. going into camp .. Very Happy , Wow .. why not ? ... all the great players start as rookies .. and while no one wants AD to feel overwhelmed ... His play as a starter is one of the biggest keys to the Pistons' future for the next dozen years or so .. Very Happy We have to be careful to not get our hopes up .. So far .. based on what Drummond has said and done (lost 22 pounds before camp to get to 280), has a variety of shots and moves that come naturally .. passes out well to start a FB .. blocks shots .. (Man to Man D is not there yet ) (does not block out well) (can barely make any FT) .. But .. character, attitude, effort, ability .. all are outstanding .. Psyched! dance

FORUM Empty Orlando Summer League????

Can somebody offer a rational explanation of why the Orlando Summer League venue was the Orlando Magic practice facility? That's not even a regulation-size court.
