Toronto Game
I understand the anger with Drummonds and his defense. But I believe the guy will step up and become the defender he has to become. I know he will.
S.Johnson need minutes and time to mature. The kid really could have used two more year of college. But that's today's NBA for you. But make no mistake about it, Stanley Johnson will become A star....
I like T.Harris. This guy has gain some weight. He looks bigger and ready to score and work hard on defense.
This team has some potential but A few changes need to be made and some development need to happen.

HELL OF A POST!!!!!
Great assessment of our team and its weaknesses. I thought I was the only one who viewed SJ as being overhyped and overrated at this point of his career, but you're spot on with "a ball-dominant, non-shooting tweener, under the rim, muscular guy with serviceable basketball skills, a big ego and a big mouth. Still plays like a rook" comment. I personally am not satisfied with SJ's lack of "hops," his apparent resistance to coaching/teaching by seasoned professionals. I don't understand the minutes KCP is given when there's players behind him that can be developing; Hilliard, and Silent G are intriguing and Bullock has proven that when given a chance, he can offensively outperform KCP.BallinD wrote:We learned what we already knew:

Drummond plays tissue paper matador defense, but wants to be a dominant center, disconnect! SVG say sayonara to the "tweaked" 4 in 1 out scheme, cause the league figured it out last year (and we knew that) there are no spot-up shooters at the key SG position to take advantage of it. (Tobias, Morris and Ellensen as SFs & PFs will be fine in time, relax guys.)
KCP's prime backup SJ is what he is, a ball-dominant, non-shooting tweener, under the rim, muscular guy with serviceable basketball skills, a big ego and a big mouth. Still plays like a rook.
Ish is not Reggie. We knew that. If we had a SG /secondary ball handler (Gbinije Hilliard, or (please trade KCP for a bag of jock straps.) we might stand a chance.
As it stands, when Reggie comes back, we will need hero ball from him this year as well untill Ellensen and Gbinije get seasoned, (next two years). Still need a shooter, even with Gbinije, Ellensen, Bullock, Hilliard. It would help if they were not on the bench!!! Stan
The worst thing this team needs is for Reggie Jackson to be given the "green light" to play hero ball! He's most effective, with the forwards we have, playing team ball beginning with the pick & roll and getting the talent around him involved; please don't have Harris, Morris, and young Ellenson standing around watching RJ do his thing.
Two things I feel will make this team play up to its potential this year is (1) trade KCP ($20 million over the CAP folks) while the trading is possible for an upgrade at SG and (2) SVG hires a young/old, innovative coach to guide this team.
Great post Ballin.

OTOH
On the defensive side of the ball, we can emphasize D all we want, but we do not have the personnel. Trade???
Top to bottom, Dre at the 5. Reggie/Ish at the 1.
Where is the defense gonna come from? Neither Mook, nor Tobias are particularly long, springy, skilled defenders. Serviceable.
Is that why SVG plays KCP 38 mins a game? But he is barely a plus defender, and gets exposed on the regular. His backup, SJ is a minus defender, but he is physical and tries hard?
IDK (head scratcher) The worst shooter on the team in the SG position hogging minutes, while the second worst shooter on the team, backs him up.
But Toronto is really good. It was just one game.

Other great news Pistons on their way back to playing downtown in the D, finally all 4 teams playing downtown.
If Assweiler has a career day on Sunday, the season is over. If they can't stop THAT stiff (Hoyer, Keenum)..........I really see no hope. Even if they win.
I just think it's fun to watch Stafford finally turning his potential into actual production. His biggest improvement has been remaining calm, side stepping the rush and keeping his eyes downfield. Losing CJ was the best thing that could have happened to him, imo.
As for our Pistons, it's hard to gauge on just 1 game. It is easy to see that even though I don't think Reggie is a winning type PG, he certainly is our best player, and it'll be tough without him. Ish effung Smith should be a D-League coach......but here he is leading our team. And DAMMIT DRE.....play some D, and shoot you're FT's underhanded or something.

20 GAME RULE IN EFFECT
I'm not going to pass and solidifying judgement at this point, but right off rip I see the same coaching issues as last season. PG is an obvious concern we don't have one.
Pope!!! well I don't now what more I can say on this because I'll be repeating the same thing I've been saying since we drafted him. He's not a shooter in the since of a (Ray Allen, Reggie Miller, Rip Hamilton) Pope is a scorer although so were the previous mention (they just happened to be able to shoot consistently) I would be happy if was in the area of being a Affalo on a consistent basis.
For now as always Pope issue is about fit and usage in an offense not suited for him and this is a SVG issue that he needs to find resolution for. Yes we need to trade him, no he's not worth 20 million a season, no he's not a bad player, yes he's not a fit on this team. I can honestly say that I've never seen a starting SG this bad of a fit on this team when I think back on all the tandem of starting PG-SG we've had.
I agree with P-Boy that far too many excuses are giving and we need to be actively looking to cut ties quickly. Pope does not represent the title of his position SHOOTING GUARD maybe we should just call his position GUARD or something less definitive like IDK GUARD.
On Morris being to short at 6'7 playing PF that was about the height of Big Nasty so he can do it, but there will be times he looks out of place but I wouldn't want to break up the Morris/Harris connection they are our best players at this stage.

WTF I'LL SAY THEY WIN 45 GAMES THIS SEASON

The sad part is that if we could get Drummond playing as good on defense as KCP, coupled with Morris, this team could win scoring 91 points on a regular basis.
The team was a bit cold, and that can be contagious sometimes, but like Don said, we should be able to weather this storm.
I thought we had a nice size advantage on them that we didn't fully exploit, but they are ECF finalists at home, so this was a tall order anyway.

Phillip your 1 man crusade to send Pope packing...........I dunno. It's starting to make a little sense. Not many teams succeed without a high scoring PG. He's certainly not worth 20 million. With Reggie in there, Pope makes more sense. But with Reggie out, it is definitely time for Pope to step up and prove that he can handle the load Offensively.

Hi Murph. I agree that Morris is a SF playing out of position. We have a talented starting 5, but not sure Morris fits at the 4.
This Boban guy reminds me of Chuck Nevitz. I'm not sure he's able to jump. He didn't last night. Leuer? Beno? Wtf is Van Gundy thinking? Is our identity supposed to be slow and soft off the bench? And he wonders why we got outrebounded? Really?!?!
I also agree with the earlier Andre criticism. He refuses to work on the Defensive end. Our only hope night in and night out is that our shots fall and we can outshoot the other team, because we only have a couple guys willing and able to defend.

The Gump Parade
What about trading Morris, a 1st rounder and 1 or 2 of our white gump roll players for a power forward that can play interior defense...someone like Serge Ibaka.
I think this stretch 4 experiment, with our midget PF Morris, has about run it's course.
I mean Morris was measured at 6'7 in stocking feet at the draft combine when he was 21 years old. In what world does that make him 6'9 in the NBA? We need a real starting PF, not a chubby converted SF.

Just like with all of my Detroit sports teams, I paid little attention to the Pistons this offseason. I knew Reggie was hurt, and we have Ish Smith (Are you freaking kidding me?) to replace him until he comes back.
So I settle in.........look at the starting lineups, and think "Geeze, we should beat these guys, even with Reggie out". Then the bench came in. A parade of white gumps who stand flatfooted Defending and also under the rim as the Raptors went around and over us. Our bench is a joke. And Stanley "Big Stuckers" Johnson? I know he's young. That's the nicest thing I can think to say (Easy Don.........just my opinion).
Put me down for 44 wins please. But they'll need some bench adjustments to accomplish that. That was pretty embarrassing.

Don, I fully agree! The big men, especially Drummond, lost this game.

Point guards were not responsible for this loss - No big man can play defense
Andre Drummond God bless him, now has the max contract but doesn't have the mindset to be the player this team needs. He wants to score. Folks who didn't watch the game might think that Andre played a key role scoring 16 points. But that is not the real story and SVG knows he has real problems with his big man. After all this time, Drummond fails to make the right rotations on defense. He is almost always out of position and it is clear that either Andre is way out of shape to play or is just not a quick thinking guy this team needs to protect the painted area. Andre wants to show off his new moves on offense just like last year. No change is attitude relating to him playing a KEY ROLE on defense. He can't make free throws. His stats are very deceptive. The other two centers and perhaps the big rookie might be a better choice to get minutes. This is only one game and of course Andre will have his shining moments this season but tonight his team needed Andre to establish an inside presence on defense and it never happened. He looked like a rookie on defense instead. Baynes didn't have a good showing on defense either but he just had surgery so that might be expected especially being that Toronto has such a strong center.
I am encouraged however with this team overall. I think without Reggie playing, this team is more talented than last year's team. The guys played hard and were close enough to say they had a chance right up to the last 4 minutes. The skill players couldn't stop their skill players on defense and their shots were not falling. It should be said that there were too many poor decisions relating to attempting off balance long range bombs too often. Both guards were getting into the paint pretty easily but the other 4 players were not moving to the open spots quickly enough.
I am wondering if Johnson is still having foot issues considering his limited playing time. I want to see more of Ellenson if the other older big men continue to get beat on defense. One game means nothing though so this team has the potential to be really good in my opinion. Both guards are fundamentally sound and that is refreshing. They both work hard on defense as well. Things should improve relating to wins but SVG has to be scratching his head relating to the poor mental game Andre Drummond played. In his defense, he did take a powerful blow to the head in the first quarter. But I am surprised that his overall attitude relating to bringing a great effort on defense is so flat. He still looks as if he doesn't know where he needs to be and is caught off guard when drivers penetrate. He switches off his man to guard a driving who is being properly defended and leaving his man wide open for the pass and an easy layup. He has to be a better decision maker and a faster thinker. And I am not sure anyone can teach that at this level of basketball.
Better days ahead Piston fans. This team does have some hard nosed players who will figure it out.

Pope wants 20 Mill plus per season
I just want to be the first Pistons fan to thank Pope for all his services here in Detroit. While he has been sub-par, he has been A guy who goes out and plays super hard, night in and night out. The results are inconstant and shakey at best but nobody can question this young mans effort.
For that I say thanks. And I hope you find some FOOL out there to pay you MAX money.
Good LUCK!

Pistons record
I will have to pick the Pistons record on the low side only because The Pistons will be making A big time trade for A starting 2-Guard to replace Pope. That will shake up the chemistry of the team for A few games.
So let's say 47 wins, A big trade for A starting 2-guard, and A battle in the first round that goes 7-Games. If the Pistons have the 7th game at home. They make it to the second round.
If everybody stays healthy!!!!!!!!

I see The Stones better than they've been for years and steadily improving; I speculated a 45 win season last year (losing to my betters by 1 game) so this year I'm seeing 49 wins! I'll do my reasoning breakdown later in the day.

I predict Reggie Jackson's sore knee will improve and become a distant memory by the All Star break. Also, SVG will trade a 1st round pick, a starter and a 1 or 2 of our better roll players for an All Star SF or SG before the trade deadline.
46 wins and a second round appearance in the playoffs.
